通常,没有水平尾翼的飞机被称为“无尾飞机”。飞机在飞行中其升力作用点(气动力中心)在飞机重心之后,因而产生低头力矩,正常式布局的飞机靠水平尾翼产生一个向下的负升力(使飞机产生抬头力矩),来保持飞机的纵向平衡;而无尾飞机则要在机翼后缘装升降副翼,在飞行中靠升降副翼向上偏转产生向下的负升力,来平衡上述的低头力矩。机身两侧的升降副翼在同向上下偏转时起平尾升降舵的作用;在左右反向差动时,起副翼的作用,可操纵飞机滚转和转弯。无尾飞机在机翼后缘装有升降副翼,因而无法在机翼后缘再装高效增升装置(增升的襟翼),使其起飞着陆性能变
