From April to June 1999, 24 women who were pre-discharged from hospitals and 24 obstetricians and midwives from 4 different types of hospitals underwent qualitative surveys. They mainly used in-depth interviews to understand their views and attitudes on the status of obstetric services. The results showed that maternal and health care workers expressed their need for and support for postpartum accompany support, delivery of analgesia during delivery, and single delivery room; lack of awareness of some obstetric interventions that should be cancelled; maternal fear of delivery pain and lack of confidence in natural delivery. And the wrong understanding of cesarean section affects the choice of mode of delivery. It is suggested that the transformation of maternity-centered obstetric service model needs policy support, improvement of obstetrics facilities and change of people’s concept.
