一九七五年,我们与龙海县朝阳大队农科组结合,进行试验,首次突破三万斤大关,亩产达31106斤,但含糖份不高,仅10.87％。一九七七年在本所继续试验,亩产达33600斤,含糖份达14.45％,亩含糖量达到4855斤,首次实现高产高糖的要求。一九七八年的试验,亩产为32623斤(含糖份为13.37％)。一九七九年试验田的面积共六亩多,其中有一坵一九七九年元月十五日下种,一九八○年三月十四日砍收,经省、地、县有关部门的代表现场验收,面积1.119亩,品种为粤糖57/423,实收蔗茎43542.2斤,折亩产38911斤,蔗茎含糖份为13.66％,折算亩蔗茎含糖量高达5315.3市斤,创出了更高的水平。
