This paper argues that the basic reason for the existence of enterprises is that the transaction costs between consumers or demanders are non-zero. An enterprise is an economic mechanism that saves the transaction cost of demanders or deals with the transaction costs. In the real world, the unusually high transaction costs of demanders make firms more market-based in the Austrian sense and at the same time are neoclassical producers or market substitutes in the Coase sense. This article develops a unified business theory that integrates these three roles.
