氮气一直被认为是热处理气氛运用方面的一种理想的基础气体。因为氮气对大多数金属呈现隋性。把氮气与其它活性气体混合的想法已经引起很大的兴趣。例如把氮气加入所需的适量的氢。但是,与气体燃料制造的气氛相比,对包括热处理在内的大多数公司所需的数量而言,人们觉得氮气还太昂贵。表1给出了引自1966年的典型数字的例子。尽管如此,氮气确实得到不少运用,它通常运用于需要高纯度的地方。例如用于气冷式真空热处理过程,电子工业中的炉内钎焊,贵重的产品或材料的热处理。
Nitrogen has long been considered as an ideal base gas for heat treatment applications. Because nitrogen is inert to most metals. The idea of mixing nitrogen with other reactive gases has drawn great interest. For example, nitrogen is added to the desired amount of hydrogen. However, compared with the atmosphere made by gaseous fuels, nitrogen is considered too expensive for the quantity required by most companies, including heat treatment. Table 1 gives an example of the typical number from 1966. In spite of this, nitrogen does get a lot of use, and it is usually used where high purity is required. For example for air-cooled vacuum heat treatment, brazing in the electronics industry, heat treatment of valuable products or materials.
