Since its independence in 1991, absorbed foreign direct investment has been a major force in boosting its own economic development. And its foreign investment has risen steadily, doubling every four to five years. By 2003, Latvia attracted nearly 10 billion U.S. dollars of foreign investment, of which direct investment was 3.145 billion U.S. dollars. At present, the per capita amount of direct foreign investment ranks fifth among Central and Eastern European countries.
