The authors previously demonstrated that antithrombin III reduces endothelial cell injury induced by murine endotoxin-activated leukocytes. This is achieved by the increase of endothelium releasing prostaglandin I2 (a potent inhibitor of leukocyte activation). In endotoxin-treated mice, the authors evaluated the dose of antithrombin-III required to prevent damage to such endothelial cells by comparing the effects of different doses of antithrombin-III on pulmonary vascular injury.
