Hugh Hull’s lab is devoted to understanding the techniques used for the efficient movement of the human body and then transferring that knowledge to automated equipment that not only restores those who are disabled, but also enhances normal ability. Uncomfortable shoes, clumsy crutches, painful prostheses. When science and technology encounter biology, the interrelationships are rarely perfect - they often prevent the body they should help. Hugh Hull thinks technologists can do a better job of changing this situation. As an associate professor in the Department of Media Arts and Sciences and a leader in bio-mechatronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, Hull is developing complex equipment that helps humanity by imitating nature.
