Currently,the history of constitutionalism during the late Qing era has become a focal point in the fields of law and history.The Remaking of an Old Country,1911-1917 is an intriguing book published recently.The author scrutinizes state building and the construction of constitutionalism during the period from 1911 to 1917.He argues that the negotiations between the North and the South,the abdication of the Qing emperor,and the amalgamation of the southe and northe govements resulted in a great compromise that guaranteed the continuity of sovereignty and prevented the disintegration and collapse of the state.However,the foundation of the Republic had an inbo deficiency,and so different groups had significant divergences in the construction of republican constitutionalism and adopted different approaches toward integration,which eventually led to the failure of constitutionalism.
