Hi! My name is Kathy Meister.
Today, I’m gonna show you how to make a vegetable salad. Then, we’re going to add a few extras and turn it into a fabulous chef salad. So go grab a knife, a cutting board, a vegetable peeler, a salad bowl, and we’ll be ready to start cooking!
The basic ingredients I’m using today are:
1. Lettuce
2. A red pepper
3. Two stalks of celery
4. Some cherry tomatoes
5. Some green onion
6. A cucumber
7. Two carrots
The first step is to wash the vegetables we’re gonna be using. We also need to peel the carrots and the cucumbers. Now I’m gonna chop the lettuce into bite-sized pieces. The red pepper is first cut in half, then the stem and the seeds are removed. Now cut it into strips, and then it gets coarsely chopped. Next, we’re gonna slice two carrots and add them to our salad. We need to trim off the ends of the celery, then slice the celery into about one-quarter-inch slices.
Now for the tomatoes. I love cherry tomatoes! Be sure to cut them in half, or they tend to go flying across the room when you try to stab them with your fork. Green onions are great on salads. Trim off the ends, then cut them into about three-inch strips.
Cut them together, and start slicing. Add the dressing just before you serve your salad.
If we want to turn this into a chef salad, just add some extras like eggs, kidney beans, cheese, bacon bits, even some leftover boiled potatoes.
That’s what’s great about a chef salad: you can toss in whatever you like, add some dressing, and you’ve got yourself a meal. Enjoy!

首先,把我们马上会用到的蔬菜都清洗干净。胡萝卜和黄瓜要去皮。现在呢,我要把生菜切丝,使之适合食用。先把红色菜椒对半切,再去其茎和籽。将它切成条状以后,我们再把它切成一粒粒。下一步,我们要将胡萝卜切片,并加到我们的沙拉里。将芹菜茎的两端切齐并切片,厚度约为四分之一英寸。
接下来是番茄。我最爱樱桃番茄了!一定要记得将它们对半切开,否则别想用你的叉子抓到它
们——它们(是如此光滑)会四处乱窜的。绿洋葱是沙拉的绝佳配料。将洋葱两头切齐,再切成约三寸长的条状。
把所有的菜放到一起来切,而且一定要切细切碎。加上调料以后,就算完成制作了。
若是你想要把它变成一份厨师沙拉,只需要加上蛋、芸豆、奶酪、熏肉片,甚至上顿剩下的熟土豆。

Pepper
西方食物里的pepper既包含我们所指的菜椒、辣椒,也包括胡椒。常见的菜椒(也称“甜椒”或“灯笼椒”)主要有red pepper, yellow pepper和green pepper。black pepper和white pepper分别是黑胡椒和白胡椒。而我们日常用到的很辣的红色小辣椒则是long pepper,或者cayenne pepper。

把“stalk”(茎)作为量词,看起来很奇怪。但是事实上,我们食用的很纤细多叶的芹菜在西方是没有的,他们只有粗壮的西芹,并且在制作菜品的时候,也时常用“芹菜的几根茎”来衡量用量的多少。
Green onion
西方蔬菜里的洋葱一般分为两种:red onion和green onion。前者为紫红色,口感浓烈,刺激性较强,多用于熟食;后者为绿白色,口感微甜,刺激性弱,可生吃。
Salad dressing
这是一个将沙拉调味酱比作“沙拉的装扮”的比喻。沙拉酱的种类繁多,大体上可以分为mayonnaise(蛋黄酱)和French vinaigrette(法式油醋汁)。mayonnaise主要为蛋奶制品,脂肪含量较高,口感香滑;French Vinaigrette因为添加了法式芥末而口感酸辣,但脂肪含量较低,可以酸奶为佐进行食用。
