长期以来,演出频繁的天津戏曲舞台,荟萃来自四面八方的杰出人才在那里献艺,从而天津被人称之为戏曲大码头。从清末民初天津剧坛响应资产阶级维新派“改良戏曲”口号,率先尝试新剧实践;艺人们的创作喜新图变;女艺人大胆突破登台禁令,开创了京剧演员男女同台的先河;天津艺人带头将京剧播向世界;京剧在中西方文化的碰撞中别开生面等几个侧面,梳理百余年来戏曲艺术在天津发展、演变、流播的轨迹。
