The first survey of physics by the National Research Council (NRC) was completed in 1966 by a committee led by George EP-ake of Xerox, volume. The second survey, launched by another NRC team in 1972, this time under the chairmanship of D. Alla-n Bromley of Yale University, was filled with four books. This month, another committee of the research association, led by William F. Brinkman of the Sandia National Laboratory, published his own survey, “The Physics of the 1990s,” which has Volume 8: A General Survey, Seven Panel Reports on Sub-areas of Physics. The extension of the physics survey itself is very illustrative. Physics is prosperous, both intellectually and experimentally. Brinkman declared in the preface: “These reports prove that the physics business is full of vitality, creativity and fruitfulness.”
