According to John Minna, director of the Naval Medical Oncology Division at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), some new biological discoveries have made the prospects for lung cancer better for the first time. At the Fourth International Conference on Oncology Therapy, he said that the current assessment of lung cancer prospects is different from the pessimism commonly held in the last meeting. In 1984, it was biologically well-recognized that effective treatments were being studied or that they would be engaged in research in the short term. There are three new insights in biology that have potential clinical utility. First, lung cancer cells can be cultured in vitro.
