Greenland in the northeastern Americas, most of the Arctic Circle, an area of about 2.17 million square kilometers. The weather here is cold, most of the year for the ice cover. Of the 26,000 inhabitants, about 23,000 are Eskimos, mainly hunting and fishing. In the eighteenth century, Greenland was a Danish-Norwegian colony and Greenland belonged to Denmark after the separation of Dannu in 1814. During the Second World War, the United States established a naval and air force base here. In 1953 Denmark promulgated a constitution that changed Greenland from a colony to a part of Denmark and in 1954 the United Nations adopted a proposal to incorporate Greenland into Denmark. Since Greenland is of great significance to the air traffic across the Arctic and to the northern territory of the Soviet Union, the United States considers it extremely important in the military.
