Fresh Aconitum flower bud (5.6 kg) was extracted with methanol at room temperature, and the solvent was removed to obtain a methanol extract (1.0 kg). The extract was dissolved in 2% hydrochloric acid and extracted with diethyl ether. The aqueous layer was basified with aqueous ammonia (pH 9) and extracted with chloroform to give a crude alkaloid fraction (12.95 g).
