《宋史·艺文志》史部目录类著录了大量目录书籍,可谓“目录书”之“目录”。因年代久远,其文字传抄上有不少讹误;著录体例、编排方式也不甚统一。但这类目录书数量大、种类多,收有很多专科书目,且不少书目都是首次著录,所以其史料价值与历史地位不容小觑。有宋一代文治之兴,可从《宋史·艺文志》所著录的繁浩目录书中窥见一斑。然而这些目录书亡佚严重,流传于世者已十不及一,甚至在编书之时,许多目录书的编撰人已不可考。
