1919年初,在新文化运动所引发的新旧之争日趋激烈的背景下,张东荪与傅斯年、胡适等在《时事新报》、《新潮》上展开了一场是否应该在输入新文化的同时破坏旧文化的论争。张东荪提出在全力输入西方文化的同时,对传统文化持“不骂不破坏”的态度;傅斯年与胡适则强调输入新文化的同时必须破坏传统文化。在论争中,他们虽不同程度地接受了对方的主张,却因此更加强了“因相近而区分”的心态,并隐隐显现出分居上海与北京的两方对新文化运动正统的争夺。在某种程度上,日趋激烈的新旧之争也并非新与旧之间的文化竞争,反倒是基于不同西方思想资源的新与新之间的竞争,表现出新文化运动本身的多义性。
In the beginning of 1919, under the background of increasingly fierce war between the old and the new triggered by the New Culture Movement, Zhang Dongsun and Fu Ssu-nien and Hu Shi carried out a study on “Current Affairs Newspaper” and “New Trend” whether to destroy the old culture Cultural debate. Zhang Dongsun proposed that while inputting western culture fully, he would hold the attitude of “not criticizing and not destroying” to traditional culture. Fu Sinian and Hu Shih emphasized the necessity of destroying traditional culture while inputting new culture. In the debate, although they accepted each other’s claims to varying degrees, they further strengthened their mentality of “separating because of their similarities” and faintly displayed the orthodox battle over the New Culture Movement between the two sides, separating Shanghai and Beijing. To some extent, the increasingly heated dispute between the old and the new is not the cultural competition between the new and the old. Instead, it is based on the competition between new and new resources of different Western ideological resources and shows the ambiguity of the New Cultural Movement itself.
