GEC Marconi Systems has delivered the first Kariwara towed sonar array to the Australian Department of Defense to meet the requirements of the Royal Australian Navy for quick deployment of separate surveillance sonars. Towing sonar arrays are usually oil-filled, bulky, and create significant limitations for tugs. However, the “Caravara” towed sonar array is lighter, thinner and more durable, capable of being quickly deployed from frigates or submarines. The system will be refined to be equipped with new collins class submarines (to be the new submarine of the Royal Australian Navy) as part of phase two of the development plan and to equip the Royal Navy’s surface ships.
