我国水稻三系选育,始于一九六四年湖南省黔阳农校。一九七○年以后,全国各省、市、自治区采用种间杂交、亚种间杂交、品种间杂交及突变不育株利用等多条途径开展研究,在一九七三年完成了籼稻三系配套,近几年来,三系选育工作进一步发展,使籼、粳、糯稻,早、中、晚稻三系配套材料更加丰富,现有的不育系就细胞质不同而分,已获得三十多种,就细胞核不同来分,则更达数百种之多。把这些三系材料进行比较分类,找出它们之间的特点及其遗传规律,这对遗传、育种等学科的发展和指导新三系的选育,将有十分重要的意义。
