彼得·佩林·汤姆斯是一位留名青史的印刷工,曾为马礼逊刊印过《华英词典》等多种书籍;他亦是一位卓有成就的汉学家,曾将多种中国古代文献译成英文,所译《中国求爱诗》一书甚至对德国文学产生了一定影响,推动了中国文学文化在西方的译介。但中国学界对汤姆斯生平活动与汉学成就的了解却十分有限,过往论述或简或谬。着眼于此,文章首先尽力考察了汤姆斯生平活动,尤其是梳理了他刊印的各种书籍,介绍了汤姆斯的汉学成就,特别是他在英译中国古代文献方面所作出的贡献。文章最后详细考察了汤姆斯英译的《中国求爱诗》一书,指出该书包括《花笺记》《百美新咏》《后汉书》《缙绅录》等多种中国古代文献之英译,尤其查考出该书“附录一”涉及的32位中国古代女子的姓名。
Peter Palin Thomas, a famous historian, has published many books such as Huaying Dictionary for Morrison; he is also an accomplished Sinologist who has put together many Chinese ancient literature was translated into English. The translated “Chinese love poetry” even exerted a certain influence on German literature and promoted the translation and introduction of Chinese literature and culture in the West. However, Chinese scholars’ understanding of Thomas’s life activities and the achievement of Sinology is rather limited. The past discussion is concise or absurd. Focusing on this, the article first tries to examine the life activities of Thomas, especially combing the various kinds of books he has printed, introducing the achievements of Thomas Sinology, especially his contribution to the English translation of ancient Chinese literature. In the end, the article examines the English translation of “Chinese love poetry” by Thomas. It points out that this book includes many English translations of ancient Chinese literature such as “Hua Jian Ji”, “Bai Mei Xin Yong”, “Hou Han Shu” and “Jin Shen Lu” , In particular, examines the book “Appendix I ” involved in the name of 32 ancient Chinese women.
