《瑞普·凡·温克尔》(Rip van Winkle)是美国小说家华盛顿·欧文(Washington Irving)借鉴欧洲传说故事创作的一篇带有浪漫色彩的短篇小说。其主人公曾一睡二十年,醒来人世间已是沧桑巨变。这种“仙乡淹留型”叙事模式在中国文学中并不少见。那么,东西方相似故事中存在哪些差异?各自侧重点何在?有那些相通之处?本文试图将《瑞普·凡·温克尔》与中国类似传说从叙事学角度进行考察,比较异同,分析他们在不同文化背景下的独特意义,进而探索东西方民间文学叙事中相对时空观的价值。
Rip van Winkle is a romantic short story by American novelist Washington Irving drawing on European legends. The protagonist had slept twenty years, waking up in the world is the vicissitudes of life. This “fairy countryside flooded ” narrative mode is not uncommon in Chinese literature. So, what are the differences in similar stories between East and West? What are their respective focuses? What are the similarities and differences? This article tries to compare the similarities and differences between Rip Van Winkle and similar Chinese legends from the perspective of narratology, Their unique meanings in different cultural backgrounds, and then to explore the value of relative space-time viewpoints in the narration of Eastern and Western folklore.
