由于钱钟书先生注重回溯中国古典文学及相关观点而忽视新诗及其理论蕴含的启示,即使从比较诗学的角度涉及西方象征主义,却与其重要的应和理论失之交臂,故《通感》的论述仅止于修辞手法层面。多年的研究表明,波德莱尔的应和论包含同时又超越通感,更具艺术本体论层面的价值,并因此被奉为象征主义先驱。中国现代新诗亦超越了传统诗词的手法,经由应和之途建构起中国象征主义诗论。
