The “Arjun” main battle tank in India is named after a great hero in Indian mythology. In hindsight, this decision is not without irony, for Arjun, as its main battle tank, as its name implies, is itself an unrealistic image. Over the past 13 years, successive annual reports of both the Secretary of Defense and the Department of Defense have used the project as a shining symbol of India’s daring advancement in defense research and envisaged that the tank will become one of the most advanced tanks in the world when it is operational. At the end of the parliamentary budget meeting, the State Minister in charge of defense research and development said: “The pledge will enable the Army to get first-rate products.”
