Since the 1960s, China started to develop shellac vigorously. Its output was second only to India in the 1970s and 1980s, and Thailand ranks third in the world. Yunnan Province is blessed with over 80% of the country’s output. After 1986, due to price liberalization, macro-control, unsalable products, plummeting prices, and even unmanned acquisitions, many production sites stopped production, dropping from the highest annual output of over 3000 t to around 1000 t. Since 1992, the market has started to recover and the prices have picked up. According to the statistics of relevant departments, the export and domestic sales need more than 3000 tons. Although the export prices are low, the production is restricted, but the domestic sales gap is relatively large. On the whole, this is a golden opportunity for the development of shellac production . 1992
