中国汉代崇尚厚葬,从西汉时起,墓葬习俗中就以画像石或画像砖作为装饰材料,此风俗兴盛近四百年,直至东汉末才日渐衰弱。汉画像是汉代陶塑与地下冥宅的结合,主要用于墓阙、墓葬或祠堂的建筑,体现了汉代人的丧葬思想,同时也是汉代高超艺术水平的集中体现。如今,这种墓葬的习俗虽然消亡了,但是却把一个个不朽的艺术精品留存在历史的文化长廊中。这些历史遗存留给后人的不仅仅是乐舞文化史学研究的珍贵资料,更重要的通过其千姿百态的、鲜活的、栩栩如生的乐舞百戏之绮丽华美和宏大规模造型艺术形象,让世人体会那一时代“天人一体”的审美风度,展现出汉代乐舞艺术雅俗共融、兼收并蓄、包罗万象,充满艺术灵智的美学品格。《汉书礼乐志》载:“武帝定郊祀之礼以李延年为协律都尉,多举司马相如等造为诗赋,作十九章之歌”;
