Sept. 13-16, 1981 Geologists, seismologists and engineers gathered at Kn-oxville, Tenn., To discuss the earthquake in the eastern United States. Geologists and seismologists feel somewhat proud that they finally realized something about the earthquakes in the east, such as the devastating earthquake that struck New Madrid (Missouri) in 1811-1812. But for the first time, these scientists admitted that they could not report the magnitude and location of the next major earthquake in the east, especially the time. This makes engineers deeply anxious. They want to know exactly what they want to know. However, even with such uncertainties, the engineering community has been slow to move forward in the quarrel in order to step up and standardize its design procedures for seismic design and construction. Scientists are most concerned about the eastern earthquake near New Madrid
