Cancer is a major hazard to the health and longevity of Shanghai residents. Among all causes of death, cancer has been ranked as the number one killer. According to statistics in 1994, there were 22,000 people who died of cancer throughout the year in Shanghai. In fact, fundamentally, cancer is not terribly scary. Because it is a kind of preventable and treatable disease. The World Health Organization’s Committee of Experts has long pointed out: “Approximately one-third of all cancers are caused by known and preventable causes. Another one-third of these diseases can be detected early and treated promptly. Cured, reasonable treatment for a third of the patients who cannot be cured can reduce the pain and prolong life.” This is the famous “three-third” viewpoint in cancer prevention.
