The main difficulty in determining rare earth elements in Chinese herbal medicine is its low content and high phosphorus, calcium, and other metabolites, which interfere with the determination of rare earth elements. Tribromoarsenazo is a newly developed colorimetric reagent with high sensitivity in Wuhan University. It is currently used mainly for the determination of total rare earths in rocky soils and alloys. The determination of rare earths in Chinese herbs has not been reported. In this paper, photometric conditions for the determination of rare earths in the presence of tribromoarsine in formic acid were tested; ion exchange-PMBP extraction was applied.
