2016年12月31日,北京市轨道交通16号线北段已正式开通,截至目前,北京市轨道交通运营总里程已达到574公里。与此同时,3号线一期、八通线南延、昌平线南延一期、平谷线和新机场线一期等5条线路也已经开工,总长达126公里,预计在未来几年实现通车。根据《北京市“十三五”时期重大基础设施发展规划》,未来5年,北京市轨道交通将如蛛网一般合纵连横。北京城市轨道交通运营总里程将增至900公里,分担公共交通出行量的比例超过55%,中心城区轨道站点750米半径覆盖率达到90%。北京市轨道交通再次迎来新的建设高峰。
