The authors have suggested that patients undergoing gastrectomy are prone to develop esophageal cancer, which may be due to changes in nutrition after gastrectomy or gastroesophageal reflux after surgery. From 1965 to 1983, the author encountered 12 patients with esophageal cancer after gastrectomy and collected reports of such patients in Japan during this period. This article presents a retrospective analysis of these patients and discusses possible associations between gastrectomy and esophageal cancer.
