April 3, 2010 at 3 pm, the Fengtai District Court of Beijing held a first instance verdict on the much-watched “Romania Labor Case.” Dozens of migrant workers stood in full court, and when the collegial bench ruled that “the plaintiffs requested China International Enterprise to return 50,000 yuan to pay the arrears of wages owed by Romanian employers and to pay the litigation claim for the cost of living during the suspension of work” , Chen Ping (a pseudonym) and other 52 people face the expression turned into joy from the tension, exposing a long absence smile. Together, they read the verdict carefully over and over again, with the bitter aftertaste of the hardships of the past year mixed with only their own knowledge.
