1 Introduction The environment of the silk industry has undergone tremendous changes at the end of the 20th century. In particular, Japan’s silk industry has declined rapidly. Recently, a reporter from BBC Radio reported that “Japan’s silk industry has entered museums.” From the current situation, you may think that I look forward to the future of the Japanese silk industry. Sloppy. However, I began to feel that at the initial stage of the new millennium, the Japanese silk industry is sprouting something new. In many places in Japan, various kinds of measures for the development of new types of silk are being implemented. I believe that these new measures will gradually converge at the new starting point of the “Silk Road to the 21st Century.” In this speech, after summing up the status quo of the Japanese silk industry, I will talk about new measures for the development of new silk in Japan.
