National policy clearly stipulates that France must maintain the safety, reliability and performance of nuclear weapons and therefore authorizes the Atomic Energy Commission to begin the research and development phase of the MJL program. The device is considered the cornerstone of a “simulation plan,” with the same objectives and scope as the DOE’s “science-based management plan.” Both past and present high-energy laser devices in France are used for experimental research in laser plasma physics and for a better understanding of laser science related to mega-Joule lasers. The purpose of these activities is to verify the knowledge, experience, abilities and techniques that are all planned to achieve the objectives of an inertial confinement fusion mission. The deuterium / tritium pellets are ignited to release huge fusion energy in the laboratory, allowing physicists to carry out relevant experimental research in various fields of application. Against this background, a cooperation program was developed with the counterparts at Livermore National Laboratory, which is developing and constructing a “national ignition”. The purpose of the cooperation is to work together in all areas of science and technology required by their respective programs for plasma physics or laser science.
