关于康拉德的短篇小说《进步前哨》,有如下三个问题有待于廓清:康拉德究竟想在这部作品中表现什么样的主题?对马可拉这一人物应该作什么样的评价?另一人物凯亦兹的死因是什么?这三个问题的答案都应该从对“进步”话语的质疑这一语境中去寻找。盲目地接受“进步”话语,然后又盲目地走上“进步前哨”,这就是所有殖民主义者的心灵轨迹。离开这一轨迹去分析所谓的“黑暗人性”,难免会导致对小说主题的误读。
On Conrad’s short story “Progressive Sentinel”, there are three questions that need to be clarified: What kind of theme does Conrad wish to express in this work? What kind of comment should Marker be? What is the cause of the death of another Kaydez? The answers to these three questions should all be sought in the context of the questioning of “progressive” discourse. Blindly accepting the words of “progress,” and blindly embarking on a “progressive outpost.” This is the spiritual trajectory of all colonialists. To leave this track to analyze the so-called “dark humanity” will inevitably lead to a misreading of the novel’s theme.
