INTRODUCTION The Laser Geodynamics Satellite (LA-GEOS), which was launched from the Wytheston test range on May 3, 1976, arrives at a scheduled orbit. While other satellites are also targeted for terrestrial laser ranging systems, this is the first satellite dedicated to laser ranging. To that end, LAGEOS plays a key role in NASA’s Earth and Ocean Dynamics Applications Program (EODAP) and in its international efforts to strengthen the geophysical research of laser measurement systems.
