“中年”是个外延很大的概念,电影界称谓的中年导演是指郑洞天、张暖听、谢飞、王君正、黄健中、王好为、吴贻弓、杨延晋、宋崇、吴天明、滕文骥、颜学恕、韦廉、胡炳榴,陈家林、丁荫楠、陆小雅……这样一批人,他们的导演序号是“第四代”,他们的年龄都在45岁左右,他们都是60年代的老大学生。在人们的印象里,探索性影片(后来正规为实验电影)是和第五代导演联在一起的。其实这个印象并不正确。如若单说第五代导演的探索性影片,那倒可以划出一个独立的系列:张军钊的《一个和八个》是开端,陈凯歌的《黄土地》最高成就,田壮壮的《盗马贼》是极端之例等等。不过,如若总论探索性电影,它们的第一个应是吴贻弓的《城南旧事》,就是说,
