However, Baldwin was disgusted with the title of “Black Writer”. He did not like people having the title “Black” in front of his name, just wanting to be a “good writer.” Baldwin’s uniqueness in the glittering contemporary American literary world is precisely because he boldly broke through the black literature in the traditional sense and limits his writing beyond the blacks’ problems as vulnerable and minorities. This article intends to use his earlier work “Giovanni’s Room” as an entry point to explore the non-ethnic characteristics embodied in African-American literary works.
