本文系作者为《鲁迅旧体诗英译》所做序言,回顾了作者研究鲁迅尤其是研究鲁迅诗歌的经历。作者以鲁迅旧体诗翻译进入西方汉学界,随后进入鲁迅早期思想研究和清末民初中国诗歌研究,出版著作和翻译多种。他对研究中遇到的一些问题的反思,及其对西方汉学界的看法,颇能给人启发。本文还收录了作者与一位青年研究者的对话,谈了翻译鲁迅旧体诗过程中的甘苦,并对遇到的问题,及鲁迅旧体诗其他几种英文译本,发表了自己的看法。
This article is the author of the preface to the translation of Lu Xun’s old-style poems, reviewing the author’s experience of studying Lu Xun, especially the study of Lu Xun’s poetry. The author translated Lu Xun’s old-style poetry into the Western Sinology, and then entered into the study of Lu Xun’s early thought and the study of Chinese poetry in the late Qing and the early Republican China, publishing many books and translating. His reflections on some of the problems encountered in the study and his views on the Western Sinology are quite inspirational. The article also includes the dialogue between the author and a young researcher, talks about the pain and suffering in the process of translating Lu Xun’s old-style poetry, and expresses his own views on the problems encountered and on several other English versions of Lu Xun’s old-style poetry.
