This paper discusses the modification of the traditional anti-skid safety criterion of a gravity dam built on low shear strength ground in the earthquake region. The nature of the dam during earthquakes and the necessary modifications to its design were also taken into account. We recommend replacing the anti-slip coefficient with an “acceptable slip condition” when the maximum possible earthquake occurs.
