16th Century Sheepskin Map Draws Antarctica In July 1960, Professor Charles Hapgood of Keene College in New Hampshire, USA, received an Antarctic map painted on an antelope. The author of this sheepskin map is Perry Rais, an official of the Turkish Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 16th century. A good navigator wrote many books about sailing but then he fell out of favor and was beheaded in 1554 or the following year. The map drawn by Luis in 1513 was rolled up into a canopy on a dusty shelf until 1929, when it was discovered at the Royal Palace Library in Constantinople. Professor Hapgood discovered that Luis’ map shows the frozen coast of Maudeland, Antarctica. Its coastline is very accurate
