电讯的出现在新闻传播史上具有里程碑的意义。晚清电报建成后迅速为报刊所使用,由此而诞生新闻电讯,这是新闻事业特别讲求时效性的内在要求使然,并从个案领域透视出电报这一西方近代科技文明成果引入中国后对晚清社会所产生的显著影响。而晚清报刊访员利用中国电报线拍发新闻电讯当在19世纪80年代之后,且体现出从专传谕旨向一般社会新闻拓展之趋势。至20世纪初,新闻电讯获得重大发展,报刊栏目的设置因此而发生重要变化。此与中国电报线的迅速拓建以及新闻电报的半费政策密切相关。
