In the past 60 years, there has been a great expansion of afforestation in the British Highlands. There has always been an inherent contradiction between agriculture and forestry, especially on marginal lands. In recent years, there have been some discussions on the co-operation between the two industries, indicating that there has been at least a change in attitudes towards land use. One of the key reforms to achieve the goal of self-sufficiency in livestock husbandry and forest products is forest grazing, which can most closely integrate agriculture and forestry and provide two products on the same land. Modern timber forest grazing is intensive, and the South of the United States has been very successful, as has New Zealand over the years.
