将太空收获的太阳能运回到地球上利用的理想,向现实又走近了一步从太空收集太阳能并将其传送到地球的想法,已经有不少于70年的历史。早在1941年,Isaac Asimov就在其短篇小说《理由》(Reason)中,设想利用微波束将空间站收集到的太阳能传送到各类行星上。从太空直接截获太阳光而非任其自由穿过大气层的优点是,大部分光热能量不会被大气吸收。据热衷该技术的人士称,通过将太阳光转换成适当的频率光波(即所谓的大气窗口之一,这种频率的光波在穿越大气层时能量损失最少),空间接收器产生的能量是地面接收器的5倍。
The idea of using space-harvested solar energy back to Earth to take advantage of it has come a long way toward reality. The idea of collecting solar energy from space and sending it to Earth has been at least 70 years old. As early as 1941, Isaac Asimov, in his short story Reason, envisaged the use of microwave beams to transmit solar energy collected by space stations to a variety of planets. The advantage of intercepting sunlight directly from space rather than letting it freely pass through the atmosphere is that most of the photothermal energy is not absorbed by the atmosphere. According to people keen on the technology, the space receiver generates energy by converting sunlight into an appropriate frequency light wave (one of the so-called atmospheric windows, which has the least amount of energy lost through the atmosphere) 5 times the device.
