The Gwangju Biennale was founded in 1995 and its international influence stems partly from the public relations and commemoration of the Biennale as a cultural project to the Kwangju massacre on the one hand, and also on the selection of art directors, themes and exhibitions of previous biennials. The exhibition spanned 20 years before and after the 10th anniversary. The first 10 years coincided with the peak of the Biennale’s discourse.
