As one of Hawthorne’s most famous novels, the Scarlet Letter wins people’s praise and favor both at home and abroad. The first appearance of the Scarlet Letter attracted many scholars’ attention to make research on the author’s tendency and the moral standard in the novel. Hawthorne expressed both his confusion and confidence toward the religion and life by the three characters’ experience in the novel. The central theme of Hawthorne’s works is contradiction.
