As Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul has a long history and tradition. Due to its unique geographical location, Istanbul is also Turkey’s largest port, commercial center and major tourist attraction. This historic city with over 3,000 years of history was originally the Byzantine city of ancient Greece. In 330 AD, the ancient Roman Empire was split into East and the West Empire, Istanbul was renamed Constantinople (also known as the New Roman) and became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (also known as the Byzantine Empire). Since then Istanbul has also become the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and Istanbul has the reputation of “after the city” because of its geographical location and pleasant climate.
