Initially, it was the abstract beauty of the molecule that attracted David Smith to join the scientific research career. When he was studying near Manchester, England, he cultivated his love of physics, but it was before the chemistry teachers and Linus Pauling’s book The Essence of Chemical Bonds inspired him to start studying chemistry. When studying at Oxford, Smith synthesized molecules that recognize both positive and negatively charged ions in water, and he is also studying the interaction between them. For Smith, it is easy to think about the application of chemical sensors, but he is more focused on basic science. He did post-doctoral research at the ETH Zurich, and since then, in 1999, he has been a lecturer at the University of York in the United Kingdom.
