毁淫祠与废佛寺是嘉靖初期宗教政策的重要内容,其推行背后有着帝王偏好、礼制改革、乡约推行等多重因素的驱动。在这样的背景下,理学家们得以一伸其志,居官期间多通过毁淫祠来传播自身理念,而对大多数地方官员来说,毁淫祠、废佛寺的盛行又给了他们纾解财政困难的机会,寺观田产更是成为从地方到中央觊觎的对象,一些官员甚至提出了十分具体的操作建议。不过,在不同的地域社会中,扩大化的废毁行动一方面引起了地方士人的强烈反弹,另一方面他们在编纂地方志书,构建地方话语时,也曲折地表达着欲迎还拒的心态。
