An atomic cluster consisting of 60 carbon atoms, which was named Buckminsterfullerene (fullerene-60, C_60), was identified by H. W. Kroto and co-workers in a cluster beam produced by laser ablating graphite in 1985. It was predicted that the molecular structure would be symmetrical about a truncated icosahedral hollow cage. In 1990, an important break-through in preparing C_60 was made by Krtschmer and co-workers. Then widely exploring researches began to be made in the fields of superconductor, catalysis, semi-conductor, magnetism, lubrication, etc.
