英语是世界上使用人数最多的语言之一。对于一个非英语国家的人来说,不懂英语是越来越不方便了。英语是美国的官方语言,本身就说英语的美国人对外语又是如何看的呢?他们是否认为掌握了英语这一世界性语言就足够了呢?不是的。美国人认为,仅会英语是不够的。克林顿政府就提倡和鼓励学生在学校学好外语。美国人现在已经认识到,对于另一种语言和文化的学习,就其本身来说,是一种理解事物差异和认识事物复杂性的训练。仅只由于这种可转换的技能——且不谈经济竞争、国家安全以及学术成果等更为重要的原因——外语学习就应
English is one of the most used languages in the world. For a non-English speaking person, it is more and more inconvenient to understand English. English is the official language of the United States. How do Americans who speak English themselves read foreign languages? Do they think it is enough to have English as a universal language? No. Americans believe that only English is not enough. The Clinton administration has advocated and encouraged students to learn a foreign language in school. The Americans have now realized that the study of another language and culture is, in itself, a training to understand things and understand the complexity of things. Only due to this convertible skill - and not talking about more important reasons such as economic competition, national security and academic achievements - foreign language learning should be
